One Little Choice…
The other night I was in a restaurant with two totally magical beings. It’s a beautiful restaurant in a beautiful place to live.
And we looked around, and so many people just looked…
I don’t mean that in a critical way. Not at all. I mean that they looked genuinely sad; Stressed. Tired. Checked out. Lonely, even.
We wondered together, “Why are these folks looking so sad?” But really, it’s no big surprise because…
…it takes a lot more effort than people think to maintain a happy headspace. It’s not a one-and-done decision to ‘Just be happy.’ It’s a thousand little choices each and every day to say ‘Yes’ to the things that feed you and stay OUT of the things that drain you.
And those choices are not always easy to make. Sometimes, all it takes is ONE little choice to send you down the rabbit hole and into chaos.
It goes something like this:
Someone says the wrong thing in the wrong way, and you start to think of all the things you could have said or done differently. Your head winds deeper into it. The worry sets in. It’s hard to focus as thoughts spiral. Before you know it, an hour or two has gone by, and now you’re more stressed because you’re behind schedule, hustling to catch up, while the gears grind slowly.
There are a million variations, and they all start with…
…one little choice.
And if this were a once a month kind of thing, it wouldn’t be such a big deal. For most people, it’s not. It’s a little bit every day, and that worry and spiraling sticks around, leaving a kind of funky reside that can be a hard to shake, which drains your energy and makes it harder to break free.
It builds up, and that’s exactly how you get a room full of people in a veritable paradise looking sad, stressed and tired; unable or unwilling to engage with the beautiful human beings right in front of them.
This is sad.
And the reason that people stay stuck in this pattern is because they’re IN IT; When you’re inside the bottle, it’s impossible to read the label.
They think the solutions have to be complicated because life seems so complicated, and if they could just ‘See’ how it all fit together they could solve it — nothing could be further from the Truth, by the way.
They don’t realize that they chose this. They think that the answer is ‘Out there’ somewhere and they go on an endless, frustrating search.
They’ve tried to change and failed so many times, that they’ve lost trust in themselves. They think that the only way for it to stick is to change EVERYTHING in one grand gesture; another 10-day silent meditation, or an ayahuasca journey; maybe just scale everything down and live in the forest for a while- following your ‘Spirit’ into oblivion.
No, the most profound change is actually in the little choices we make every single day.
One little choice at a time.
Choosing to stay in your own lane.
Choosing to NOT take things personally.
Choosing the food, the media, the people who energize and uplift you.
Choosing to honor what your body is trying to tell you.
Choosing to see the beauty rather than the flaws of one another.
Choosing to speak up when we have something important to say.
Choosing to zip it when we want to criticize, gossip, and judge.
Each one of them EPIC in their own right.
Little choices that will add up before you know it into a radical transformation of your experience of life. And it’s so simple, it will seem like magic- which I suppose it is.
Wishing you a day filled with Love, Joy, and Peace.
